Trollstigen is one of Norway's most iconic scenic roads, renowned for its dramatic landscape and remarkable road engineering. Climb Trollstigen through its famous 11 hairpin bends rising above Isterdalen. The modern mountain road took eight years to build, from 1928 to 1936 — around 160 years after the first recorded initiative for a road connection between Valldal and Romsdal in 1776.
The 320-metre Stigfossen plunges down the mountainside beside Trollstigen. The road crosses the waterfall on the historic stone Stigfossbrua, with the rushing water passing directly beneath the bridge.
At the edge of the mountain plateau, modern architecture blends into the rugged landscape. Walk out onto the spectacular viewing platforms for panoramic views over Isterdalen, Stigfossen and the 11 winding hairpin bends far below.
Stop at Øvstestølen, a historic summer mountain farm with Gamleselet, dating back to 1565 and considered one of the oldest surviving houses in Møre og Romsdal. Beside the old farm buildings, a beautiful historic stone bridge crosses the mountain stream.
At Gudbrandsjuvet, the Valldøla River has carved dramatic formations into the bedrock over thousands of years. The sculptural viewing platform is an architectural work in its own right, winding along the gorge and bringing you close to the powerful river below.
Descending towards the fjord, the mountains open into the exceptionally fertile Valldal Valley, famous throughout Norway for its strawberries. Fertile soil and long summer days create ideal conditions for growing fruit and berries, giving Valldal its identity as Norway's Strawberry Valley.
Valldal is the starting point of Valldalsleden, following the route of King Olav Haraldsson, later St. Olav, who helped bring Christianity to Norway. According to legend, he defeated a sea serpent here, leaving its mark on the mountainside of Syltefjellet.
